Why Is There a Santa Claus Rally? A Letter from Connecticut

A puzzle-solver in Hartford asks why a Santa Claus rally happens, what the Connecticut River is, and how insurance works

A Letter to Santa from Hartford, Connecticut

Dear Santa,

Hi Santa! My name is Penelope and I am 9 years old. I live in Hartford, Connecticut, a historic New England city by a river. I love reading and solving puzzles. My question is: why is there a thing called a Santa Claus rally? My geography question is: what is the Connecticut River? And my social studies question is: what is insurance, and how does it help people? Thanks, Santa!

Love, Penelope (age 9)

Santa's Reply

Ho ho ho, hello Penelope! A puzzle solver asks a puzzling question, and I am happy to crack it for you. It is not a parade, as some folks first think! A Santa Claus rally is a phrase grown-ups use about the stock market, the place where people buy and sell small shares of companies. It is called that because it happens around Christmastime, in the last days of December into the new year, when share prices often rise a little. Why does it happen? Nobody is completely sure, but people believe holiday cheer, year-end activity, and hopeful spirits all play a part. So it borrowed my merry name for the happiest time of year.

Your geography question: the Connecticut River

The Connecticut River is the longest river in New England, flowing right past your own Hartford on its way to the sea. For hundreds of years it has been a route for boats, a source of water and food, and a gathering place for towns along its banks. It even gave your state its name. Your social studies question: what is insurance

Insurance is a clever way that people help one another. Many people each pay a small amount of money into a shared pot, and then if something unexpected happens to one of them, like a fire or an accident, that pot helps pay to fix it. Your own Hartford is famous as a center for insurance companies. It is really teamwork with money, so no one has to face a big problem all alone. Explore more at Britannica Kids.

Solve a tricky puzzle for me, Penelope. Yours warmly from the North Pole, Santa Claus.
